Preventive disinfection against African swine fever (ASF)

African swine fever is caused by an Asfi virus, which belongs to the enveloped viruses (enveloped double-stranded DNA viruses). African swine fever is a notifiable animal disease in most countries. You can find more information on the homepage of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute.

Due to the particularly high resistance (tenacity) of the test viruses used in the DVG test methodology, it can be assumed that the products listed in the DVG disinfectant list for animal husbandry in the area of "limited virucidal activity (enveloped viruses)" column 7b (see here) are effective against the enveloped viruses occurring in animal husbandry. This also includes the African swine fever virus.

For preventive disinfection against African swine fever as part of biosecurity measures, DVG-listed commercial disinfectants from the DVG disinfectant list for animal husbandry can therefore be recommended (note: only the commercial products on this daily updated list are actually DVG-listed) with the corresponding entry values listed in column 7b for virucidal activity against enveloped viruses.

You can obtain the appropriate DVG-listed disinfectants from your vet or specialist traders.

The disinfectant concentrations and exposure times required for effective disinfection must be observed. In addition, it must be ensured that at cool temperatures the concentrations specified at 10°C are applied. At application temperatures below 10°C, the specified disinfectant concentration should be doubled. Disinfectants containing aldehyde and disinfectants based on organic acids (except peracetic acid) should not be used at cool temperatures below 10°C due to their loss of efficacy, unless a DVG listing for lower temperatures (4°C) is available.

In order to ensure the minimum necessary exposure time for the disinfection of boots in the entrance area of livestock holdings/animal houses, disinfectants with a listing entry should be used for this purpose with an exposure time of 30 minutes. The boots to be used only in the stable (method with boot change) must be thoroughly cleaned before entering the stable and disinfected for at least 30 minutes in a container with an appropriately prepared disinfectant solution (see above). The disinfection of boots by means of disinfection mats in the entrance area of stables is not sufficiently effective and is generally not recommended.

The disinfectant solutions must be renewed regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
